From Le Fayet train station:

You then arrive by the Bettex cable car (Bettex/Mont d’Arbois ski area) and a 2-minute walk from Saint Gervais town centre

. There will be a new station in St Gervais centre taking you to Bettex/Mont D’Arbois for the skiing in winter and trekking in summer

With this project, the mayor hopes to alleviate congestion on this mountain road, which is often jam-packed in the winter season. The public inquiry, which ended on July 22nd, led to a favourable opinion. The installation of the valley lift is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 12% to 15%, “thanks to the transport of approximately 125,000 people who give up road use,” as stated in the inquiry commissioner’s report.

“At last, the residents of Fayet will be able to benefit from everything available in Saint-Gervais and vice versa,” rejoices Jean-Marc Peillex, the mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains. “Currently, a resident of Fayet cannot go to the swimming pool in Saint-Gervais. He has to take his car and drive 5 km to get to the pool. Tomorrow, it will be 6 minutes, and he will be in the centre of Saint-Gervais, next to the medical centre; it will be wonderful. The project, estimated at 14 million euros, is presented as the future carbon-free link between different altitudes, the train station at the bottom of the village, and the Le Bettex ski area.

The mayor assures that the Valley Lift will only operate “when there is demand” and not continuously throughout the day. For holidaymakers, and especially locals like students going to the high school in the valley, it will indeed be a public transport. The idea is to include it in a transport card or ski passes.
